A card proves possession, not identity — it records that a card was presented, nothing more. Card readers are still the fastest to roll out, because most organizations already issue a badge, and the cheapest per door. That trade-off is worth making where speed matters more than certainty. Where one employee clocking in for another carries a real cost, pair the reader with fingerprint or face on the same terminal rather than relying on supervision.
On fingerprint units the sensor decides the rejection rate: an optical sensor reads reliably on clean, undamaged fingers and struggles with worn, dry or wet ones, which matters far more on a production line than in an office. Face recognition is more sensitive to its surroundings — strong backlighting behind the employee is the usual cause of slow recognition, and it is far cheaper to solve at site survey than after installation.
